One of the most common themes of clients in personal development and therapy is they want to gain control of the way they feel, that their emotions “run their lives”.
Often this is due to how we have learnt to react to circumstances or relations with others, that is, a response.
Human Mental Efficiency
Our minds and neurology have a wonderful way of becoming efficient. Anything that we focus on enough or that occurs in a heightened state of awareness, are coded and stored as automatic responses. In the event of a similar situation, the body begins to react, before we consciously think through the situation.
Stimulus Response
Pavlov identified the ability to harness this potential while conducting research on the digestion of dogs. His research lead to Classical Conditioning in psychology, often termed “stimulus response”, ring a bell?
Taking this a step further, we can generate responses predictably in ourselves and others, by provided the right stimulus. And we can do this using any or a combination of the body’s 5 senses (referred to in NLP as Representational Systems or Rep Systems).
NLP Practitioners learn multiple ways of ‘setting’ anchors and ‘firing’ the anchor. That is, setting up the stimulus response relationship in the body and mind, then to be able to use it on purpose when you need that feeling or state of mind the most!
